Washing machines are fantastic time-saving gadgets that can get clothes and even some household items clean in no time. Unfortunately, even the best washing machines are prone to trouble for different reasons. If you experience a problem with a washing machine, it may be tempting to immediately call a repair expert, but you may not realize that there are some easy troubleshooting steps you can take yourself to solve common washing machine issues. Check Your Fasteners

Many washing machines use spring washers of various types due to spring washers being suited to handle vibrations and thermal changes with ease. Your washing machine may use annealed spring steel washers, three-wave washers or another type. In any case, if a washer has come loose, your washing machine may be unbalanced, leading to rocking and excess vibration. Inspect your washers carefully and check each bolt, tightening as needed. If a washer needs to be replaced, spring washers manufacturers like Superior Washer & Gasket can provide solutions. Even repair professionals choose Superior Washer for custom spring washers, and you can order replacement washers from Superior Washer & Gasket online for fast delivery.

Inspect Your Drain

When a washing machine finishes its wash cycle, a drain opens at the bottom of the tub to allow water to be removed so the spin cycle can start. A clog in the drain can cause water to pool in the tub and prevents the washing machine from moving forward with the spin cycle. If you have standing water in your washing machine tub, you may have a piece of clothing or a small item clogging the drain. In this case, unplug the washing machine from its outlet and try removing as much water as possible by scooping it out with a cup or bowl. You may need to soak up any remaining water using dry towels placed inside of the washing machine tub.

Once the tub is mostly clear of all water, visually inspect it for any clothing or items that are blocking the drain area. If you don’t see anything, you may need to remove the drain hose from the washing machine. To do this, you will need to tilt the washing machine over to access the bottom or back of the machine in most cases. You may want to put down additional towels on the ground around the washing machine to catch any water that spills out of the drain tube. Detach the drain tube and inspect the drain opening to see if anything is clogging it. If a small object, like a child’s sock, is clogging the drain opening, you may need a pair of pliers or a similar tool to remove it.

Check Your Breaker

If your washing machine isn’t receiving any power, go to your breaker box and check the switch for the washing machine or the area that houses the washing machine. A tripped breaker will be in the “off” position while the remaining breaker switches will be in the “on” position.

If the breaker has been tripped, you can usually reset it by simply switching it back into the “on” position. Keep in mind that a tripped breaker could indicate an electrical problem, especially if this happens more than once. If this is the case, you should consider contacting an electrician to inspect the breaker box and the outlet that the washing machine is plugged into in order to correct any underlying electrical problems. Electrical issues may create a fire hazard, and they are especially dangerous when they involve areas where water is used.
